Road-rage, driving under the influence, and guns are not a good recipe for a safe, peaceful night.
31-year-old Luis Herrera Cruz is behind bars after he allegedly followed, tailgated and threatened another driver and the driver’s wife before crashing his car in Longmont.
What happened?
Just after 8 p.m. Saturday night, a woman called 911 reporting she and her husband were being followed by a sedan driven by a man armed with a gun near Longmont. According to a press release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, here’s the sequence of events that happened:
The caller and her husband were traveling north on HWY 287 when a sedan began tailgating them.
When they stopped at a traffic light on HWY 287 and Lookout Rd., the driver of the sedan pulled alongside their vehicle, began yelling, and brandished what appeared to be a handgun.
When the light turned green, the caller and her husband drove away but the sedan continued driving aggressively, repeatedly pulling alongside their vehicle.
After the woman heard gunshots, her husband used his own handgun to fire several times toward the suspect’s vehicle.
The two vehicles drove west onto Oxford Rd. and then north on N. 95th St.
Shorty after, the victims saw the suspect’s vehicle veer away from the roadway.
The suspect crashed in Longmont just south of Front Range Community College near N. 95th St. and Pintail Dr. Longmont Public Safety Officers soon arrived and found Cruz with a head injury that appeared to be a grazing wound. He was taken to the hospital.
That’s not all police found…
Police discovered Cruz had an airsoft handgun, which resembled a a real firearm.
Cruz admitted to drinking alcohol prior to the incident and appeared intoxicated.
Cruz’s vehicle had multiple bullet holes, including one through the windshield.
Cruz was arrested and booked for felony menacing, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and driving under the influence.
