Happy Monday, Longmont! Have you ever gone to a movie theater to see a documentary? A lot of people did this weekend. You Can See Everything, the secretly-made documentary about disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes premiered in theaters this weekend, making a staggering $15 million — a figure virtually unheard of for a documentary, and the biggest opening for a doc in over 20 years. The film centers on the 34 days leading up to Holmes’ 11-year prison sentence. Holmes, who still maintains her innocence, invited two documentarians to live with her and her partner 24/7. It’s an unorthodox and unusually intimate documentary, and perhaps the most successful doc we’ve seen since Phil.

Today — Longmont’s water chiefs head to a Colorado water symposium, a Longmont tennis player’s Cinderella run in the state tournament falls short, and a long-awaited announcement from a local donut shop.

Let’s dive in.

🌎 Longmont water leaders head to Fall Water Symposium

Water leaders across the state, including several from Longmont’s Water Board, are convening in Loveland this Wednesday for Northern Water’s Fall Water Symposium.

The event comes at an uncertain time for Colorado water after many cities across the state made major cutbacks to municipal and residential water use ahead of the summer — though Longmont only instituted reductions to municipal water use, stopping short of mandating cuts for locals.

Highlights of the symposium include…

  • A panel discussion with members of the Northern Water Board of Directors.

  • An introduction to a new collaborative initiative in water clarity with West Slope partners.

  • An update on drought management and a look at prospective climate conditions.

The symposium takes place Wednesday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Embassy Suites in Loveland.

Zooming in:

The Longmont Water Board’s most recent water status report painted a suboptimal picture of the city’s water resources:

  • Flow on the St. Vrain Creek was measured at roughly 23 cubic feet per second, a far cry from the creek’s 125-year average of 54 CFS.

  • Union Reservoir was measured at 54% full.

  • Ralph Price Reservoir’s status was cheerier — It’s about 96% full.

  • Basin reservoirs at the end of August were about 55% full — a 15% decline from its level at the same point last year.

Zooming out:

The symposium provides somewhat of a preamble for what is perhaps the Super Bowl of western U.S. water management — the annual Colorado River Water Users Association Conference. It’s expected to be particularly pivotal (maybe even dramatic) after the tension of the 2025 edition and as many Colorado River dependents withstand stubborn drought conditions.

  • Some good news on that front — the U.S. Drought Monitor reported last week that drought conditions improved across portions of the west after a storm system interacted with moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Rachel bringing significant precipitation.

  • The conference takes place in December at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Headlines
3 Big Things

The end of the Golf Course Advisory Board: During Longmont City Council’s regular session tomorrow, members will vote on whether to officially dissolve the city’s Golf Course Advisory Board, and consolidate its duties with the Park and Recreation Advisory Board. The move received unanimous support from council in an August vote, and was backed by both boards. The GCAB has historically experienced challenges with board vacancies, as well as a diminished need for one of its primary responsibilities — providing input on golf fees. In recent years, Longmont’s golf operations transitioned to an online, demand-based pricing model, reducing the need for the board’s influence on fees.

Former Longmont QB wins first start for Northern Colorado: Keegan Patterson, a former Longmont High School quarterback, made his first start for the University of Northern Colorado on Saturday, leading the Bears to a huge home win over Cal Poly, 28-18. Patterson graduated from Longmont in 2022, accepted a walk-on spot at the University of Southern California, transferred to Indiana State in 2023, then returned home this year, now playing for UNC. In Patterson’s senior season at LHS, he led all of Colorado in passing yards.

Silver Creek softball falls short in regional tournament: High school softball has come to an end in Longmont. After Longmont High School failed to qualify for a regional tournament, Silver Creek High School was the city’s final chance for a representative in the CHSAA 4A state tournament. The Raptors were among four teams in Region 7 competing for two spots in the state tournament, but a 13-3 loss to Palmer Ridge and a 13-1 loss to Rifle doomed their season.

State tennis tournament run for Silver Creek’s Henry Richter ends in semifinal thriller

Silver Creek High School will have to wait a little longer for the school’s first state title in tennis.

Henry Richter, the Raptors’ no. 3 singles player, was defeated in the semifinals of the 4A Boys Tennis State Tournament over the weekend by Colorado Academy junior Hendrik Jordaan in a three-set thriller 4-6, 7-5, 4-6.

Jordaan would go on to win the state championship, beating Peak to Peak freshman Rishit Muppaneni in three sets.

Aced it:

Henry Richter, a senior at Silver Creek, cruised through day one of the state tournament. The Raptor won both his matches in straight sets, edging Evergreen senior Gordon Salmen 6-2, 6-4 in the first round, then toppling D’Evelyn senior Simon Czarnecki 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.

It’s the type of tennis Richter had been playing all year. In fact, prior to Friday, Richter was undefeated.

  • Richter was 22-0 this Fall, prior to his semifinal loss. That included winning three tournaments: the Longmont Boys Invitational, the Granite Peaks League Tournament and the CHSAA 4A Region 4 Tournament.

  • Richter won 19 of those matches in straight sets.

  • In four of Richter’s 22 matches, he didn’t lose a single game.

    • For the uninitiated, that means he won both sets in a match 6 games to 0 (6-0, 6-0).

Zooming out:

Silver Creek also had three doubles teams in the state tournament. The Raptors’ nos. 2 and 4 doubles teams fell in the first round, while no. 3 doubles pair Tate Kostelecky and Nate Dudas won their first round match, but fell to a pair of juniors from Mullen High School in the second round.

No Longmont school has won a state championship in tennis since a Longmont High no. 4 doubles team did it in 1995.

The only other state title? Longmont senior Wayne Coates’ no. 1 singles championship run in 1949.
